You have noticed your loved one is needing more assistance in aging. You want to bring up the option of home care but do not want them to react poorly to your suggestion. When should you bring it up, and how are the questions this blog helps answer.
Starting the conversation on home care to a loved one can be difficult and uncomfortable. Elderly and senior care is normal, your loved one should not be ashamed to need expert care.
Tips for how to bring up the conversation, and navigate it are below. Lets talk about home care together, and give your loved one expert and compassionate care in the comfort of their own home.
Start the Conversation Now.
- Bring up the idea of starting home care early, do not wait for their situation to worsen or wait for a crisis to arise.
- Start by asking how they are managing on their own, what struggles they have. If they do not want to recognize their struggles, bring up ones you have witnessed or have been recently assisting them with. Be honest and express your personal concerns.
- Listen to their concerns and emotions, empathize and validate.
Focus on the Benefits.
- Understand how they may feel about their independence being stripped, explain how home care can actually foster and build more independence in a safer environment.
- Explain the benefits of home care such as, companionship, assistance with daily tasks on top of care needs (eg: light housekeeping) and safety.
- Highlight how they will be able to age their way. In their own home, in their own community.
Involve Them in Decision Making.
- Ask them what areas are most important for them.
- Let them list out what they'd like in a care aide or nurse.
- Do research and provide them with multiple options. Give them access to information they can use to help make their own decision.
Use A Positive Attitude.
- Ensure you're displaying compassion, and validation.
- When listening and validating their concerns and emotions, use positive words and tone.
- Do not push them, it usually will take more than one conversation to consider the idea of home care. If you use a negative or authorizing tone, this can make them closed off to the idea.
